Polder tours through Moerdijk

Passion and love for local products

Based on the passion for our region and the love for regional products, we created three polder tours: the Ruigenhil tour, the Oude Appelaar tour, and the Bloemendaal polder tour. The cycling tours showcase various local (farm) stores and other great locations. We love to share our pride!

Each polder has its own story and character. Each tour flyer explains the polder’s origin, after which the tour is named. This way, we like to show you our region’s origin and all its goodies and delicacies.

Polder tours Ruigenhil

From a rugged nature reserve at the beginning of the 16th century to a reclaimed area full of creeks around the new village of Ruigenhil, today's Willemstad. Willem van Oranje fortified the village of Ruigenhil into a fortress. The surrounding Ruigenhil polder retained its name and became an important weapon in the battle against the enemy of Holland.

The cycling tour through the Ruigenhil polder takes you to the most lovely locations where you can find local delicacies. While enjoying the vast polder landscape, you can also discover beautiful places, such as fort De Hel and the fortified town of Willemstad.

Polder tours Oude Appelaar

The accretion polder 'Oude Appelaar' was created by a natural marsh. The polder was already diked in 1597. The Oude Appelaar polder had a strong link with the village of Fijnaart, which had previously been swept away by Saint Elisabeth Flood. The original Fijnaart canals ran through the old marsh and later through this polder.

Cycling through the beautiful Tonnekreek, past marinas, and the unique Keenesluis (water lock), you can discover the polder Oude Appelaar. Stop at designated local (farm) stores and enjoy the delicacies. The tour ends in the fortified town of Klundert, where the old contours of the fortress are still clearly visible, and several outdoor cafes invite you for a snack and a drink.

Polder tours Bloemendaal

The development of this polder had its challenges. Only after considerable discussion between the Lords of Breda and Zevenbergen was the polder created in 1555. The polder was diked, and the water outlet initially flowed into the river Moye Keene. Nowadays, overflow runs via the stream Bloemendaalse Vliet and the corresponding pumping station.

The Bloemendaal polder tour takes you to no fewer than nine locations where you can find local delicacies. During your trip, you can enjoy the vast polders and discover places such as Mansion Bloemendaal or fields full of chickens where you can purchase fresh eggs!
